The Virgin of the Massacre

Vierge du massacre
This statue, badly damaged, is nestled in the façade of what was the first church in Aups, Notre Dame de l'Assomption. It is a reminder of the massacre which took place here during the wars of religion.
On 16th August 1574, the Huguenots of the Baron of Allemagne-en-Provence, (Alpes de Haute-Provence), set fire to and plundered the Collégiale St Pancrace, before penetrating the village walls, where they set about terrorising and wreaking havoc on the inhabitants. Outside the church, for example, they cut the throats, in front of the villagers, of 18 young people and girls. This statue commemorates this dark day.
